METRO NETWORKS’
REALTRAFFIC WEB SERVICE
EXCEEDS 30 MILLION PAGE VIEWS
-- WTOP-AM Washington DC Leads The Pack --
New York,
NY - August 9, 2005 - Metro Networks, with its subsidiary, SmartRoute
Systems, both Westwood One (NYSE:WON) companies, together with Maptuit®
Corporation, announced today that their RealTraffic™ web service
has exceeded 30 million website page views this calendar year. Of all
the Radio, TV, Newspaper, and State Departments of Transportation using
RealTraffic, WTOP-AM listeners in Washington DC, were responsible for
almost 3,800,000 page views, this year alone. All of this coming in less
than nine months since debuting the service.
Stations using RealTraffic
in addition to WTOP-AM include, WINS-AM, WNBC-TV (New York), KTTV-TV (Los
Angeles) WUSA-TV and WRC-TV (Washington, DC), The Washington Post and
numerous others. In addition, RealTraffic powers THE VIACOM NEWS TELEVISION
STATIONS’ online traffic information service, to help commuters
make better-informed travel decisions as they navigate through traffic
around their markets on a daily basis.
“Traffic is
the #1 thing that we cover. It is the DNA of WTOP,” said WTOP’s
Jim Farley, Vice President of News and Programming. “In Washington
DC quality of life is defined by where you live, where you work and how
long it take to get from one to the other. Traffic is the biggest draw
to the station. It’s traffic, then news - in that order. RealTraffic
is a very important weapon in our arsenal. It is the biggest entry point
for our website (wtopnews.com), and ours is a very serious web operation,
garnering two Edward R. Murrow Awards for best radio website and billing
close to one million dollars in ad revenue this year alone. And our listeners
are extremely pleased. While nothing can be updated as fast as radio broadcasts,
RealTraffic comes awfully close and there are very few products on the
web that can say that.”
“The success
of RealTraffic is yet another example of Metro Networks’ continued
commitment to remaining on the cutting edge of innovative traffic &
information services,” said Chuck Bortnick, Westwood One Co-COO.
“RealTraffic is the next step in the evolution of Metro Networks’
web traffic products and is quickly becoming in-demand for radio, TV and
any other media with a serious traffic information website commitment.
RealTraffic gives them the tools they need to stay competitive, significantly
increase their website traffic, deliver the most accurate, up-to-the-minute
traffic information to their audience, as well as develop an incremental
revenue stream.”
Westwood One and Maptuit
have developed the RealTraffic service by leveraging the core strengths
of both companies. Built on Westwood One’s up-to-date traffic information,
along with Maptuit’s sophisticated database of the North American
road network, RealTraffic offers personalized traffic content to ease
the driving experience for commuters, travelers, and professional drivers.
With street-level directions integrated with traffic incident information,
RealTraffic also allows drivers to choose alternate routes and avoid problem
traffic thereby making the commuting experience less painful. Together,
Westwood One and Maptuit have developed RealTraffic as a “must have”
traffic service to ease the commuting experience and aid in trip planning
for the professional driver.
By using RealTraffic,
commuters who subscribe to the service are able to set up personalized
accounts where they can enter locations such as “work” and
“home”, as well as define trips between them such as “home
to the gym on weekdays at 7:30AM”, or “work to home, weekdays
between 5:30PM and 7PM”. At the specified time intervals, the RealTraffic
service checks each trip for traffic incidents and notifies the commuter
of any traffic advisory that will impact their trip using a SMS (Short
Message Service) or e-mail alert. Using the website, the commuter will
have the ability to request an alternate route that avoids congestion.
